Traveling by airplane is generally a thrilling experience but when babies are added to the mix, the entire situation can be daunting. At all times, it is important to think about yours and your baby’s needs to ensure that you travel comfortably and with as little stress as possible.

The good news is that it is entirely possible to travel with your baby stroller or carrier through a TSA security point safely. A stroller can make the traveling experience smoother especially when you know what to expect. Fortunately, most airports nowadays have gone to great lengths to create policies that are friendly to individuals traveling with young children or infants.

If you are traveling soon with your baby, here is everything you need to know:

To bring or not to bring a stroller with you
It is important to familiarize yourself with any airline policies regarding bringing strollers onto flights. Arming yourself with knowledge will not only help you prepare, but it will also ensure that you know what to do if complications arise.

Different airports have varying policies so do not always assume that rules and regulations regarding strollers are the same everywhere. For example, some airports have rules that a stroller over 20 pounds cannot be checked in at the gate, which mean that it can only be checked at the ticket counter.

Get a tag

Labeling your stroller with a permanent and legible tag is vital. The tag should contain all your important details including your flight and contact information, as well as the details of your destination.

Most airports will tag your baby gear as luggage but some do not count it as luggage and you may have to pay an extra fee. Always do your research prior to arriving at the airport so that you can plan accordingly. If it is small and collapsible and there are extra seats in the plane, you may be allowed to take it with you in the plane so ask to find out if it is possible or if exceptions can be made.

Get a protective cover

Because your stroller is going to be stowed away with the rest of your luggage, be sure to purchase a quality protective cover to prevent external damage from occurring. These protective covers are also called "Gate Check Bags" and can be purchased in various online shops and on Amazon.

What to do with your stroller at the aiport

At the airport, you may want to move around with your stroller before you can board the plane. Confirm with the attendant what the process is for dropping off and picking up upon arrival so that you are not confused at baggage claim.

Navigating the aiport with a stroller

Arrive early: When traveling with a stroller, it's important to arrive at the airport early to allow plenty of time to check in, get through security, and board your flight.

Use stroller-friendly entrances: Look for stroller-friendly entrances at the airport, such as those with wider doors and ramps.

Use stroller-friendly elevators and escalators: Use elevators or stroller-friendly escalators to get around the airport. Avoid using regular escalators, as they can be dangerous for strollers.

Check your stroller at the gate: If your airline allows strollers to be gate-checked, take advantage of this service. This will allow you to use your stroller until you board the plane, and it will be waiting for you when you arrive at your destination.

TIPS FOR MAKING AIR TRAVEL WITH AN INFANT OR TODDLER EASIER

Pack a diaper bag: Pack a diaper bag with all the essentials, including diapers, wipes, bottles, and a change of clothes for your child.

Bring snacks and toys: Bring plenty of snacks and toys to keep your child entertained during the flight.

Consider using a baby carrier: A baby carrier can make it easier to navigate the airport and board the plane, especially if you're traveling alone.

Ask for help: Don't be afraid to ask for help from airline staff or other travelers if you need it.
